Preparatory for TOEIC

TOEIC (Test of English for International Communication) is a proficiency test in English, especially required by companies that want to evaluate their employees’ ability to communicate in English at work. There are two types of test:

TOEIC Listening and Reading: maximum score is  990 (495 in Listening and 495 in Reading). The test is on paper, lasts 2 hours and consists of 200 multiple-choice questions.

Listening 45 minutes

100 questions,  being:

  • Photographs, 10 questions
  • Answering questions, 30 questions
  • Conversation Comprehension, 60 questions
Reading 75 minutes

100 questions, being:

  • Incomplete phrases, 40 questions
  • Filling gaps in texts, 12 questions
  • Reading comprehension, 48 questions

TOEIC Speaking and Writing: the maximum score is 400 (200 in Speaking and 200 in Writing). The test is through the Internet, lasts 1h20min and consists of 19 dissertation-like questions.

  • Writing a text based on a photograph, 5 questions.
  • Answering a request, 2 questions
  • Writing a composition, 1 question

About the exam

TOEFL (Test of English as a Foreign Language) is a proficiency test in English, required especially by universities around the world, for foreign students who want to take a course there. Nowadays, its most common format is the iBT (Internet Based Test) and it consists of 4 parts:


Duration Activities
Reading 60 a 100 minutes

3 to 5 passages  with 12 to 14 questions each.

Listening 60 a 90 minutes

2 to 3 conversations with 5 questions each + 4 to 6 classes/lectures with 6 questions each.

10-minute Interval

Speaking 20 minutes

2 questions to talk about familiar topics.

4 questions to summarize a piece of reading and a listening extract.

Writing 50 minutes

1 composition based on a text or a listening extract.

1 compositon based on a heading.

The maximum score is 120 and it is valid for 2 years. The test itself is not a big deal, but it is important to study in order to obtain a high score! 

About the course: We will work on the four skills evaluated by the test in a structured way, teaching the main strategies so that the students will be able to get the highest score possible. It is extremely important that the students commit themselves to the course, dedicating extra-class time to the course.
